Roland Mundil received a Diplom (Masters equivalent) degree in Geology from Braunschweig Technical University (Germany) in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Geology from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich (Switzerland) in 1996. Following a year of postdoctoral research at ETH he joined the BGC in 1997 and was appointed to the position of Geochronologist in 2000. In collaboration with Ludwig and Sharp he was actively involved in establishing the U-daughter laboratory (including chemistry laboratory and thermal ionization mass spectrometry). Mundil’s research has mainly focused on developing, refining, and streamlining ultra-low-blank U-Pb geochronology, and on its application to problems requiring ultra-high-resolution ages, such as mass extinctions, climate signals recorded in sediments, and continental dynamics. In 2004, Mundil pioneered the application to individual zircon crystals of a novel chemical abrasion technique and thereby established the chronology of events spanning the most profound mass extinction known in the geologic record, at the boundary between the Permian and Triassic Periods 252 million years ago (collaboration with Ian Metcalfe, University of New England, Armidale, Australia). He is also well known for his work on clarifying the time scale of cyclic sedimentation in ca. 240 million-year-old strata in the Southern Alps (collaboration with Peter Brack and Felix Oberli, ETH Zürich). Mundil is also involved in research aimed at unraveling the time scales of pluton assembly (collaboration with Jenny Matzel, BGC and Scott Paterson, USC).
