BGC is involved in scientific research on all seven continents of Earth, as well as the Moon. This research is supported by grants to BGC as well as to collaborators at other institutions. Topics of BGC's research include:

BGC scientists are engaged in geological fieldwork in addition to laboratory analysis ( Facilities) of samples collected by themselves and by colleagues at other institutions. BGC scientists collaborate with scientists at more than 100 different academic, government, and private institutions around the world. The results of BGC research are published in scientific journals, books, and other media ( BGC Bibliography).

BGC scientists have conducted geologic field research in Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Cuba, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Germany, Greenland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Java, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, Turkey, the United States, and Uruguay.
